In a 2004 A&E biography special on Liza Minnelli, composer John Kander told this story of the origin of the Theme from New York, New York: “Scorsese said, almost apologetically, that De Niro had felt that the song ‘New York, New York’ was too weak, and would we mind taking another swing at it? Well we left the room very stiffly. He was absolutely right of course. We took another swing at it. So basically we owe that entire song to De Niro.”
