NYCB Vol. 10 No. 12 - The Four Temperaments

These photos show Mary-Ellen dancing the Sanguinic section in The Four Temperaments in the original costume. Balanchine hated the costumes and removed fabric from them until in 1951 the ballet was presented in tights and leotard as it still is today. Footage below of Marry-Ellen talking more about the costumes.

All photos are of Mary-Ellen in 1946. The photographers are unknown. The center photo Is sourced from "Repertory in Review: 40 Years of the New York City Ballet" and the side photos are sourced from "Balanchine's Ballerinas" (affiliate links)
