Jerome Robbins choreographed Interplay in 1945, not for ABT, but for Billy Rose's 'Concert Varieties.'
"Stirred by dim memories of the Palace and the Victoria, an era when vaudeville was at its zenith, Billy Rose, long a devoted fan, has gone to the trouble of presenting his own variety program, one that he thinks is tops. In putting it on, his vast night club experience has been of immeasurable aid. On paper his newest offering, 'Concert-Varieties,' opening tonight at the Ziegfeld Theater, has what students of form wouldn't hesitate to call 'class.'"--Sam Zolotow, New York Times, Jun 1, 1945
"Interplay [...] is as free of story as a nonobjective painting. It is done by youthful Jerome Robbins, who did the choreography of the jazzy 1944 sailor ballet, Fancy Free. Interplay, a pleasant trifle, had a summer Broadway run in Billy Rose's Concert Varieties revue, has been improved considerably since." --Time Magazine, October 29, 1945.
