Robbins: “Misha Baryshnikov asked me for a new work for himself and I said very tentatively—well, I can try, but I can’t guarantee you anything. I started work on one dance and its as terribly hard. I can’t move anything. I can’t move like around like I used to, everything hurt, I get dizzy, etc. etc. I finished the dance and he took it away and practiced it. I looked at it and, to my surprise, I rather liked it. So I tried to do another—and then another—and ended up with A Suite of Dances to Bachs Unaccompanied Cello Suites. It worked wonderfully! “
