On the opening night of Fancy Free: “[Harold] Lang’s bravura solo, in which he vaulted on and off the bar and ended one air turn in a split, drew an encore, but when Jerry was leaping onto the barstool during his own slinky swivel-hipped danzón variation, the stool gave way under him and he had to improvise the ending on the floor. By the ballet’s end all three sailors were so exhausted they could barely manage their frenzied exit in pursuit of Girl No. 3—but as the curtain came down the audience exploded in applause. The sell-shocked composer, choreographer, and cast took an astonishing twenty-two curtain calls […]“
