Rockettes 100 - No. 4 - King of Jazz (1930)

In 1928, the Missouri Rockets traveled to New York City to perform in the Broadway show Rain or Shine where the caught the eye of showbiz impresario Roxy Rothafel.

In 1930 they appeared in their first film, “King of Jazz”—a pre-Code musical revue starring Paul Whiteman ands orchestra. It contained only musical numbers and comedy sketches.

King of Jazz was the nineteenth all-talking motion picture filmed entirely in two-color Technicolor rather than simply including color sequences. At the time, Technicolor's two-color process employed red and green dyes, each with a dash of other colors mixed in, but no blue dye.

The Rockettes appear at 10:31 and 1:24:38

The Rockettes appeared in the 1929 film The Talk of Hollywood, however, they were improperly credited as the Leon Leonidoff Ballet. (Leon Leonidoff was the ballet director for Radio City) At this time, the Rockettes were known as the Roxyettes as they were performing in NYC at the Roxy Theatre, managed by Roxy Rothafel.

They appear at 45:30
