Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Vol. 1 No. 3 - Revelations

Writer's picture: Lauryn JohnsonLauryn Johnson

(3/6) “Revelations didn’t reach its real popularity until it was edited” said Ailey. The circumstances that led to the ballet being cut in half (it was originally 65 mins long) involved the company’s invitation to perform at Jacob’s Pillow in 1961. Unfortunately, the company couldn’t afford to take the live singers of the original production with them. So Ailey and choral conductor, Howard Roberts, pieced together bits of written music to be able to take to the festival. The audience was ecstatic and thus began what Ailey called “a love affair between audiences and Revelations.”
