“From the sophisticated audience of London balletomanes, accustomed to the polished perfection of the famous Sadler’s Wells troupe, the New York City Ballet Company received an enthusiastic reception tonight when it opened a month’s engagement at the Royal Opera house, Covent Garden.
“For the company’s European debut, its director chose two ballets in the classical tradition and one distinctively American, and in harmony with the anxious and troubled times. It was the first time any of them had been seen in London.
“When the curtain fell on the fourth movement of Symphony in C, the big opera house was ringing with shouts of ‘bravo!’ and with applause, not only for the leading dancers, but for the entire corps de ballet as well.
“The American style of dancing ‘may be said to be gracefully athletic, rather than gracefully poetic.’”
