Peter Martins’ “Barber Violin Concerto” features 2 couples, one dancing a neoclassical duet (originally Merrill Ashley and Adam Luders) and the other couple dancing a modern duet barefoot (originally Kate Johnson and David Parsons). Later the couples mix and match.
Jack Anderson wrote:
“Ms. Ashley and Mr. Luders stood tall, and the impression of verticality they conveyed was intensified by the steps on pointe for Ms. Ashley. In contrast, Mr. Parsons entered in a crouching position with crooked arms; he tilted Ms. Johnson at unexpected angles […].
"Having established two ways of dancing, Mr. Martins adroitly combined them. In a pas de deux, Ms. Ashley remained serene and Mr. Parsons continued to hunch over. Then Mr. Luders wandered in, lost in thought. But Ms. Johnson perpetually interrupted his mediations by rushing around him like a bothersome mosquito. The amusing scene implied that neither ballet nor modern dance can be easily dismissed; both are here to stay.” —New York Times, 1989.
