NYCB Vol. 2 No. 17 - Swan Lake

(6/10) Darci Kistler danced Odette in Balanchine’s Swan Lake for her SAB workshop performance in 1980 at 15 years old. At 16 she debuted the same role in the company. The photos are from her debut in 1981.

Looking back on her debut Darci told the New York Times: “‘Swan Lake' is a ballet with so much tradition - so, of course, I didn't feel ready for it or old enough. I didn't feel I would do it justice. So, I tried to be like an older ballerina or be like a queen, anything but myself. I didn't want to be where I was, because it scared me. And Mr. B simply said to me, 'Where have you been, dear? Alaska? You're missing the point completely.' He wanted me just to dance it, to be myself, which is the hardest thing to learn how to do.’’—Diane Solway, New York Times, 1987.
