NYCB Vol. 2 No. 22 - Slaughter on Tenth Avenue

Writer's picture: Lauryn JohnsonLauryn Johnson

Tonight is the first night of the Short Stories program! Featured in this post is the NYCB premiere of Slaughter on Tenth Avenue with Arthur Mitchell and Suzanne Farrell as the Hoofer and Strip Tease Girl. This ballet is a “show within a show” extracted from the 1936 Rodgers and Hart musical “On Your Toes” which starred Balanchine’s then-wife Tamara Geva. In 1968, his new muse, Suzanne, took on the role. I love watching ballerinas break out of their classical box with the jazzy lines in this choreography.
