[1/50] Here we go! It's officially Nutcracker season! Tune in every day (sometimes twice a day) to see the photos I have unearthed over the last year, and read stories from the dancers who were there when it all started! Today we hear from Maria Tallchief and her recollections from opening night of the very first NYCB Nutcracker season in 1954:
"I can remember very well,” Ms. Tallchief says, “standing backstage on opening night toward the end of the first act, before I had to go on. When that tree started to grow, I started to cry. It was pure magic. And I said to myself, ‘Maria, get upstairs to your dressing room. You can’t go on as Sugarplum Fairy with tears in your eyes.’”—2007 Interview by Robert Sandla
