[38/50] "After one of The Nutcracker’s most recent performances, principal dancer Patricia McBride, who has danced the Sugar Plum Fairy more often than any of the other ballerinas in the company today, was standing on the stage, a little out of breath, rubbing her foot in its tight little ballet slipper. A young dancer who had recently joined the corps came up to her and asked her why she held her arms a certain way during one of her solo variations. “Because that’s the way Mr. Balanchine likes it,” she said firmly, and in the present tense.”
