[After recovering from a hip injury] My thoughts turned to the Sugar Plum Fairy and Dew Drop in the Nutcracker. I knew I would be terribly nervous my first time back on stage, since I had never been away form dancing for such a long time. […] Right before the end of the year, I made my return in Dew Drop. Balanchine came to the theater that evening especially to see me, and I still remember him standing in the wings, watching. In fact, most of the Company seemed to be there, wishing me well. I’ll never forget the applause, the cheers really, that greeted me when I ran out onto the stage for the first time. In Dew Drop’s first entrance I simply run on, bow to the Sugar Plum Fairy, and run off, so I didn’t expect any sort of reaction from the audience. The cheers startled me and made me even more nervous than I already was."
