When Tanaquil LeClercq debuted as Odette in Swan Lake at 22 years old, the article in the Times the next day was titled: "Dancer Yesterday, A Ballerina Today."
"Such shy and engaging charm is unusual among Swan Queens, who may flutter a bit upon provocation but generally seem as able to take care of themselves as any prima ballerina absolute you can name. Miss LeClercq, while dancing the role to the letter, manages still to do it entirely her own way, and a most appealing way it is.” — John Martin, New York Times, 1952.
